Palliative Geriatric and Memory Care Massage

Priority Massage Therapy, provider of memory care services in Austin, TX, is pleased to announce a comprehensive massage therapy program designed to improve the physical and emotional well-being of its residents living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies have shown that massage therapy can significantly reduce common symptoms associated with memory care, such as agitation, anxiety, and depression. This non-pharmacological approach offers a comforting and engaging way to interact with residents, potentially improving their sleep patterns and overall quality of life.

“The aim is to provide a holistic approach to memory care, and Massage Therapy is a valuable addition to existing services. I am committed to exploring innovative ways to enhance the lives of residents and support their physical, cognitive, and emotional health”.

In Memory Care Massage I adhere to important considerations such as:

  • Shortened Sessions: There may be times when the client will only tolerate shorter sessions.
  • Adapted Touch: On any given day the client may need the therapist to be flexible in approach and technique to accommodate their comfort level.
  • Observation of Reactions: paying close attention to body language and facial expression for signs of discomfort or agitation.
  • Ask Permission: Asking for permission at various stages of the massage
  • Dignity: Maintaining highest regard for the client and their caregivers intentions and requests at all times.
  • Caregiver Presence: It is always encouraged and welcomed to have caregiver attend the scheduled session if they can.
  • Caregiver Support: By sharing expertise, perspective, and session anecdotes it may assist the caregiver to improve their personal experience of this journey.
  • Discontinue if Necessary: If the massage session is experiencing increased agitation then it may be prudent to discontinue the session.
